The Portuguese concept of saudade, which has no exact equivalent in other languages, is particularly associated with the sea, and with the constant and fixed gaze of women who watch the horizon in anticipation of the return of their beloved. This gaze captures the ambiguity of the feeling that is embodied by saudade.

The Time of Saudade is an attempt at recreating the everyday. In this project, I seek to place the condition of waiting in tension with memory, with a reference to Penelope, she who wove and unwove to pass the time and who was ultimately unable to recognize that which she had awaited for so long. I also want through this project to bring poetry and the concept of contemplation typical of Romantic landscape painters into dialogue, seeking to construct a critical gaze towards this emotional state as well as the expectation and submission implicit in it.
